Bondurant's Pharmacy is a drug store opened in 1974 that is built in the shape of a giant mortar and pestle, a common tool of the pharmacist. It is located on Village Drive near Versailles Road in Lexington, Kentucky.[1]
The pestle projects ten feet above the building which is thirty feet high. It has a diameter of about thirty two feet.[2] There are two drive-thru windows, along with parking spaces for customers who want to walk into the store. The second floor was initially designed as an apartment for the pharmacist.
This example of mimetic architecture[1] was designed by pharmacist Joseph A. Bondurant, and the design of the building is patented. The structure was featured in a television programme produced by WQED TV.[3]
